Malayalam is one of the harder Indian scripts to type. It has the largest conjunct inventory of the southern scripts, plus the chillu letters, and Unicode supports both the traditional and reformed orthographies — so the same word can be encoded two ways.
Malayalam forms hundreds of conjunct letters by stacking consonants. Typing them means chaining a consonant, a virama and another consonant in the right order, which is where most keyboard apps break down.
ൽ ൻ ർ ൾ ൺ are distinct characters, not consonant-plus-virama. Getting them wrong changes the word and makes it look wrong to any Malayali reader.
Kerala's 1971 script reform means older and newer forms both circulate. Typing by sound sidesteps the question entirely.
